Introduction
The Native American culture is engulfed in beautiful artwork and artifacts. As a people they live through their art. Have you ever created an art piece that represented more than what meets the eye? As a class we will embark on this journey to discover the magic behind this artwork!
Tasks
- Students in groups of four will create a Native American totem pole that reflects four different "images" that tell a story.
- Once complete students will create a four-slide presentation to give a more in-depth description of their creation, how this exhibits them living through their art, and the meaning of each image on the totem pole. This presentation will be presented to class.
Process
- Students will gather in pre-determined groups of four.
- They will be allotted one-two hours time to utilize the web and gather information on Native American totem poles.
- Once completed, each student will create their own section of the totem pole, designed based off of their research, but representative of their personal selves.
- This should be artsy so students should utilize construction paper, markers, colors. These individual sections should be vibrant and colorful an tell the story of the members of the group.
- Once each piece is complete students will attach them together to create their unique totem pole.
- When the totem pole is erected, students will gather to compose a four slide presentation utilizing GOOGLE Presentation to present what they learned about totem poles and describing why they created the piece they did.
- Each student should be responsible for one slide.
- Upon completion students will present their findings to class.
Evaluation
As the purpose of this activity is to be creative, students will be graded solely on their creativity and completion of activity.
